Guidance Information / High School Links
In order for students to be well prepared for high school, they need to know what lies ahead. The Ministry of Education Website offers some helpful information for both parents and students as they plan for grade 9. If you would like to see an overview of diploma requirements for secondary school and information on the secondary school system, please click here. The majority of our students will go on to our local high school, Erindale , while some may apply for the Regional Arts Program at Cawthra Park Secondary School or the International Business and Technology program at Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School. Students in our enhanced program are eligible to attend the regional enhanced program at the Woodlands. Port Credit Secondary School launched its SciTech program in September 2005. This is a unique program that is open to students who will pursue either academic or applied studies at the secondary level. P.C.S.S. SciTech will provide both a practical training ground for apprenticeships and the world of work, and an academic springboard for college and university studies. In addition to the SciTech program, Port Credit is also offering a regional Strings progam. Another program being undertaken at Glenforest Secondary School is the International Baccalaureate Program. For more information on the full range of regional programs available to our students, please click here and you will be taken to the Board's Regional Programs pages and all the links available for these programs. Still others will attend West Credit Secondary School for a more "hands on" practical, vocational secondary school program (see below). We have provided links to all of these schools. Some of our students are interested in attending Loyola Catholic School for grade nine so we have included a link to the Dufferin Peel Separate Board site where you can follow the links to Loyola.
The following page/link contains secondary school information which is summarized in the link Your Guide to Secondary School Information. Please review this link carefully for detailed secondary school information.
Please remember that Erindale Secondary School is hosting its grade 8 student/parent information night from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on November 19th. Ms. Stoch, our guidance counsellor, has set up a Guidance link on the "My Class" site with important dates and ongoing guidance information.
Academic or Applied Courses?
One of the most important and difficult decisions for our students and their parents to make is the selection of "applied" and "academic" programs. Please click here for an excellent summary of these two streams in mathematics that will make the task a little simpler for you and your child.
Flexible Boundary Information
Some parents have asked about having their child attend a secondary school other than Erindale. If this is the case you will need to apply for a "flexible boundary". As you are likely aware, this does not apply to students seeking to gain admission to the many regional programs offered by the Peel District School Board such as Cawthra School of the Arts or Gordon Graydon's Business and Technologies program. Nor does it apply to students who wish to register at a separate school. Please be aware that it is only under rare circumstances that a secondary school will accept flexible boundaries for grade 9 students. If you would like your son or daughter to register at a secondary school other than Erindale, you must inform us of your intentions, pick up an application for flexible boundary from Erindale and take this application to the secondary school you would like to have your child attend. Flexible boundary decisions are at the discretion of the receiving secondary school. Erin Mills has no say in these decisions nor is it appropriate for parents to ask Erin Mills staff or administration to work on their behalf to attain a flexible boundary admission to a particular school for their child.
If you are planning to have your child attend a Catholic school for grade 9 you are reminded that you will need to take the initiative with the Catholic high school you wish your child to attend to obtain information on the application and selection process.
West Credit Secondary
Each year we recommend that a number of our students consider West Credit Secondary School with its specialized programs as a viable alternative to attending the local secondary school. Parents of grade 8 special education students should remember that the local high school is not mandated to provide program modifications for special education students, only accommodations. This means that concepts will be presented to all students at a grade 9 level and students will need to demonstrate grade 9 competencies for success. A special education student functioning more than two years behind in the core competencies of mathematics and language may be recommended for West Credit.
For clarification on any of the above, please contact Ms. Ilana Stoch, our guidance counsellor, or our Administrative team in our main office.
